These writings have been caught in the ladder of my throat for years. They have stumbled in obscurity, tumbled with insecurity, illuminated the path of curiosity for many creatives and now they are making light into this world as a way for me to define presence, criticality and engagement more holistically. Sharing is a lesson in generosity and truth-telling.

This is an assemblage of current and past work from the last fifteen years and is a glimpse into the microcosms of informal art spaces and institutional bodies across the Caribbean and further afield. The words, reflections, exposés and travelogues are portals to other ways of being, understanding and coming to terms with our post-colonial contexts, inherent messiness and transformation.

Curatorial Multivocality through Caribbean Collaborations

Natalie McGuire-Batson writes for Issue 2 of Faire Mondes on curatorial approaches across the Caribbean region that have challenged and dismantled exclusionary global frameworks in visual art engagement. Nestled within this conversation with Annalee Davis and Katherine Kennedy, we discuss the collaborative projects that have birthed diverse archipelagic connections in an attempt to expand self-determination in a Caribbean curatorial context.

Generosity and the Practice of Art Making

In 2012, on a cultural visit to Aruba to be in conversation with Ateliers ’89–one of the oldest running informal art initiatives in the region–the seed of Caribbean Linked was born. In 2015, as co-founder and critic, I returned to reflect on the experience of bringing like minded artists, curators and writers from the region together, while still asking critical questions about its sustainability and impact on our shared space.
